Living In Tents

This powerful message confronts us with a challenging question: what are we really expecting? The central teaching draws from Jeremiah 35 and the remarkable story of the Rechabites, a family who for over 250 years refused wine, vineyards, houses, and permanent settlements because their father Jonadab commanded them to live in tents. Their obedience wasn't about legalism but about spiritual readiness. The message reveals that expectation always affects preparation, and when we examine our lives honestly, our behavior exposes what we truly believe is coming. Are we building kingdoms in a passing world, or are we living like pilgrims who remember this earth is temporary? The Rechabites understood something profound: settling too deeply in a foreign land makes us forget we don't belong there. Their tent-dwelling lifestyle symbolized spiritual alertness, a refusal to get comfortable in a world that's fading away. God honored their obedience so powerfully that even though they weren't of the priestly line, He gave them favor to serve in His temple. This challenges us to examine whether we're overvaluing temporary things because we've forgotten what God promised is coming. The call is clear: travel light, hold this world loosely, and live with the constant awareness that Jesus is returning. Our citizenship is in heaven, and we must live like people who have an appointment we cannot miss.
